The secret charm of
La Borne
By John Bailey
From "La Borne, a potter's village",
Edited by l'Association des potiers de La Borne
I came to La Borne
as the first step in a journey across Europe to Greece. l had decided
to spend six months here to learn about wood firing, which had long
interested me. I spoke virtually no French. Ten years later l am still
here, now an established «La Borne potter».
I never got much closer to Greece...
I arrived in late September 1976; The rich abundance and tranquillity
of the countryside fascinated me, as did the quality and variety of
the ceramics made in La Borne. Later l learned about the famous La
Borne fog and rain, but by then it was too late, I'd become a part
of the village. There were, and still are, wood kilns
everywhere in and around La Borne. The huge
old tunnel kilns, disused and abandoned. The small kilns used by the
contemporary potters often looked like untidy piles of bricks. However
they turned out to be efficient and economical firing tools. I wanted
to learn all about these kilns and how to build and use them.
Today there are about 40 variations of 3 basic wood kiln designs in
use in La Borne. They were nearly all built by the potters who use
them. The interaction between the potters has led to modifications
and improvements on existing kiln plans. The many foreigners who have
lived and worked in La Borne have also brought ideas from all over
the world.
The traditional tunnel kilns were used commercially until the 1930's.
These kilns vary in volume between 25 to 40 m3. They are a bit
like Chinese kilns but the other way round, with a small narrow firebox,
no chimney. just a wide exit, very practical for loading. The pots
were loaded in piles up to 2 metres. The kilns took a week to fire.
They produced pots with rich ash deposits and colour variations, not
dissimilar to the Bizen and Tamba pottery of Japan…
